Blessing of Animals Today

An Episcopal “blessing of animals” is a traditional ceremony, often held around the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi (October 4th), that celebrates God’s creation by blessing pets and other animals. During this service, animals of all kinds (leashed or in carriers), and sometimes even photos or stuffed animals, are brought to church for individual blessings from clergy. The tradition honors Saint Francis’s love for all creatures and recognizes the bond between humans and animals.
